The Pokemon TCG’s 2027 release calendar is starting to take shape, with a new English expansion reportedly arriving in February. Mega Evolution: Flowing Fists is expected to release on February 5, 2027, and will feature Mega Lucario Z ex.
The expansion is expected to contain approximately 80 cards before secret rares, continuing what appears to be a trend toward smaller English sets. Three cards have reportedly been previewed so far, and prerelease events are expected to begin in late January.
For collectors, the early information provides a first look at what comes after Delta Reign. It also raises some interesting questions about Pokemon’s approach to set sizes, the return of familiar Mega Evolution Pokemon and what we might expect from next year’s product releases.
The Pokémon Company has not officially confirmed the English expansion, so the reported name, release dates and card count remain preliminary.
Flowing Fists Release Date and Early Details
Flowing Fists is reportedly scheduled for February 5, with prerelease events expected January 23 through January 31, 2027. The expansion is believed to be based on Japan’s Aura Seeker, which is expected to arrive November 27, 2026.
Here is what has been reported so far:
| Detail | Reported information |
|---|---|
| English set | Mega Evolution: Flowing Fists |
| Release date | February 5, 2027 |
| Prerelease dates | January 23–31, 2027 |
| Main set size | Approximately 80 cards |
| Featured Pokemon | Mega Lucario Z ex |
| Japanese connection | Aura Seeker |
| Pokemon Center ETB | Not yet announced |
The connection to Aura Seeker means Japanese card reveals could give English collectors an early look at some of the artwork coming to Flowing Fists. However, English expansions do not always contain exactly the same cards as their Japanese counterparts, so we won’t know the final checklist until Pokemon releases it.
The reported February release would also place Flowing Fists relatively close to November’s Delta Reign expansion. That continues the steady release schedule we’ve seen throughout the Mega Evolution era, with collectors having only a few months between major sets.

Mega Lucario Z ex Is the Main Attraction
The biggest reveal so far is Mega Lucario Z ex, which is expected to headline the expansion. Lucario has been a popular Pokemon for years, particularly among collectors who followed the TCG during the XY era when Mega Evolution cards first became a major part of the game.
Three English cards have reportedly been previewed: Mega Lucario Z ex, Sigilyph ex and Riolu. It’s a small starting lineup, but it gives us an idea of the Pokemon receiving attention in the new expansion.
What we don’t know yet is whether Lucario will receive a Special Illustration Rare or another premium artwork treatment. Those details will matter considerably more to collectors than the standard card reveal alone.
Modern Pokemon card prices are heavily influenced by artwork, rarity and demand for particular Pokemon. A popular character can generate plenty of excitement, but that doesn’t automatically make every version of its card valuable.
We’ve seen that distinction repeatedly with recent expansions. Some of the most expensive cards feature recognizable Pokemon with exceptional artwork, while other cards featuring the same characters remain relatively inexpensive.
Until we see more of the Flowing Fists checklist, it’s too early to identify the likely chase cards or make meaningful predictions about their values.
Pokemon Appears to Be Moving Toward Smaller English Sets
One of the more interesting details is the expected set size. Flowing Fists is reportedly planned to contain approximately 80 main-set cards, with additional secret rares bringing the total higher.
That would be relatively small compared with some of the enormous English expansions released over the past several years.
Flowing Fists is expected to follow a format similar to other recent Mega Evolution expansions, which have contained around 80 main-set cards and approximately 40 secret rares.
For collectors trying to complete sets, that could be a welcome change. Large expansions can become expensive when they include hundreds of cards, particularly when dozens of Illustration Rares and Special Illustration Rares are involved.
Smaller sets give collectors fewer individual cards to chase, although they don’t necessarily make completing a collection affordable. If several of the most desirable cards have difficult pull rates, the cost of finishing a master set can still climb quickly.
There is also a difference between collecting every card and simply buying the cards you like. Someone interested only in Lucario might have a relatively straightforward path if the expansion contains just a few versions. A collector attempting to complete every secret rare could face a much more expensive project.
I like the idea of smaller expansions because they make individual sets feel more manageable. However, I wouldn’t assume the change will reduce overall collecting costs, especially if Pokemon continues releasing new products at the current pace.
A Familiar Connection to Furious Fists
The reported name is also an interesting callback to XY: Furious Fists, which was released in August 2014.
That expansion featured Mega Lucario EX and remains a recognizable part of the XY era for collectors who were opening packs during that period.
More than a decade later, Lucario is reportedly returning as the featured Pokemon in another Mega Evolution expansion with a similar name.
It’s a connection that makes sense, particularly as Pokemon continues revisiting mechanics and characters associated with earlier generations of the TCG.
That doesn’t mean Flowing Fists will be a remake of Furious Fists. There is currently no confirmation that the expansion will contain reprints from the original set or recreate its artwork.
Still, the similarity gives the release a nostalgic angle that could appeal to collectors who remember the original Mega Lucario cards.
What We Know About Elite Trainer Boxes and Preorders
There are currently no confirmed Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Boxes, exclusive promotional cards or official preorder dates for Flowing Fists.
The expansion is expected to receive the usual assortment of English Pokemon TCG products, but the exact lineup hasn’t been announced.
For collectors, the Pokemon Center exclusive ETB will be one of the more important products to watch. These boxes have become particularly desirable because they often contain exclusive stamped promotional cards that aren’t available in standard retail ETBs.
However, we don’t yet know whether Flowing Fists will have a Pokemon Center exclusive promo, which Pokemon might appear on it or when preorders could open.
Given the demand surrounding recent Pokemon Center releases, I would expect collectors to pay close attention once an official product announcement arrives. That is especially true if Lucario receives an exclusive promotional card.
For now, I would avoid paying inflated prices for speculative preorder listings. Until Pokemon confirms the products and their retail prices, there isn’t enough information to determine whether those listings offer reasonable value.
What I’m Watching Next
The next important development will be official confirmation of the English expansion. That should establish the release date, final name and initial product lineup.
After that, the card reveals will become the main story. I’m particularly interested in whether Lucario receives a premium illustration card and how many secret rares Pokemon includes in the expansion.
The Japanese Aura Seeker release could also provide useful information before the English launch, although we’ll need to be careful about assuming every Japanese card will appear in Flowing Fists.
Finally, Pokemon Center preorders will be worth monitoring once products are announced. We’ve seen how quickly exclusive ETBs can attract attention, and collectors will want to know when they can purchase directly from Pokemon rather than paying resale prices.
My Read
Flowing Fists looks like a promising start to the Pokemon TCG’s 2027 calendar, particularly for collectors who enjoyed the original Mega Evolution era.
Lucario is a recognizable Pokemon with an established collecting audience, and the connection to Furious Fists gives the expansion a little more history than an entirely new set name would.
But I think the more important development is the continued move toward smaller English expansions.
For collectors who have struggled to keep up with increasingly large sets, that could make individual releases more enjoyable to complete. Whether it actually makes the hobby less expensive is another question, especially with new expansions arriving every few months.
I wouldn’t make any purchasing decisions based on the early reveals. We still need the complete card list, official product details and eventually real pull-rate data before we can judge how collectible the expansion will be.
For now, February 5 is the reported release date to watch. If the information is confirmed, Flowing Fists could give Lucario another prominent place in the Pokemon TCG while continuing a set format that may be easier for collectors to follow.
